I thoroughly enjoyed the films at the UNICA film competition. Thanks to my friend, Alan Groucottwho invited me along to an event I knew nothing about.

As a teacher of French and German and a film enthusiast, this was a timely event and one which I'm glad I experienced. How fortunate to have such a festival in our city! I hope to show some of these to my students.

Each and every film engaged, enthralled and entertained me.

I was particularly blown away by the films Blava Terra/Blue Land (Marine Auclair March - Spain), Tour Guide Katarzyna Bojkowska - Poland) and Cafunè (Carlos F. De Vigo - Spain) and was delighted the first two were awarded gold medals and the latter a silver . Interestingly all three had a female protagonist. Two of the films highlight the plight of refugees. It was powerful to hear Katarzyna Bojkowska talk about her film after the showing, commenting that she hoped that (please forgive the paraphrase) "Next time we come across a person in such a situation to remember that we are dealing with a human being".

Thanks to all at UNICA for such a thought-provoking programme and for allowing me as a member of the public to attend. I hope that delegates have enjoyed their time in the great city of Birmingham! Have a safe journey home!

Merci Danke Gracias Grazie Dzięki
